The Colony, Texas, beautifully situated on the eastern shores of Lake Lewisville in southern Denton County, is a short 30-minute drive north of downtown Dallas on the Dallas North Tollway. Bordered by the Sam Rayburn Tollway to the south, The Colony has convenient access to the Dallas/Fort Worth Metroplex and its amenities, attractions, and cultural activities. While a family-oriented community, The Colony has seen recent commercial and tourism growth with the addition of Grandscape, a one-of-a-kind, 433-acre outdoor entertainment, dining, and shopping destination featuring a variety of first-to-market restaurants and retailers that can only be found in The Colony. While Phase I is open, this multi-phase development continues to grow and when complete, will feature a convention center hotel and spa, outdoor amphitheater, and much more.

With an annual budget of just over $12.8 million, The Colony Police Department and its 102 employees serve and protect the community’s residents, workers, and visitors. Under the supervision of the Deputy City Manager, the Police Chief provides executive-level leadership, direction, and planning for the operations and services of The Colony Police Department. This position administers, plans, and oversees the daily operations of all Police Department programs, services, and facilities. They lead staff in setting and achieving Department and City goals. The Police Chief executes personnel-related managerial and supervisory functions, including hiring, training, delegating work assignments, evaluating, counseling, and disciplining. They develop policies and procedures; implement law enforcement protection programs for the City; provide critical incident planning and management; and deliver excellent customer service.

The City of The Colony is searching for an innovative, experienced, and community-oriented leader to serve as its next Police Chief. The ideal candidate is someone on the cutting edge of policing strategies. They will have high-growth experience and be able to build out the Police Department, maintaining the level of excellence the Department has worked hard to attain.

This position requires a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice, police science, or a closely related field, plus at least 10 years of progressively responsible municipal law enforcement experience, including three (3) years at the Assistant Police Chief-level or equivalent. Graduation from a police academy is required, with advanced police supervisory training, such as the FBI National Academy, Southern Police Institute, or Texas Leadership Command College, preferred. An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered. A master’s degree in a management- or law enforcement-related field and prior experience as a Police Chief is preferred.

Candidates must have the following certifications:
• A valid State of Texas driver’s license.
• Certification as a Texas Peace Officer as provided by Texas Commission on Law Enforcement (TCOLE).
• Master Level Certification as provided by TCOLE or another state’s equivalent.
• Must continue to meet all TCOLE requirements after employment.
