THE DEPARTMENT
The Chandler Police Department (CPD) is a modern, progressive law enforcement organization that is grounded in best practices and has continuously maintained international accreditation status since 1996. This exemplary police organization is equipped with the latest technology and training, and through outstanding community support, Chandler continues to be one of the safest cities in the nation, despite rapid growth over the past many years. Developing and maintaining community partnerships is the cornerstone of policing in Chandler.

The Chief of Police is responsible for executive leadership of the Police Department and is assisted by a senior staff made up of three Assistant Chiefs who oversee Field Operations, Investigations, and Professional Services Divisions. The adopted Police Department 23/24 budget is approximately $104 million through which it employs 362 sworn officers and 177 professional staff members. The CPD has long been a beacon of innovation and policing excellence and there is a very strong desire internally and externally to see that level of excellence continue along its upward trajectory under the leadership of the next Police Chief.

THE POSITION
Reporting to the Assistant City Manager, the Police Chief leads the Police Department and its staff in the delivery of public safety services to those who live in, work in, and visit Chandler. Some of the essential functions of the Chief of Police include providing leadership and strategic direction through planning, managing and directing all operations of the Police Department; facilitating department fiscal and personnel resources; serving as a technical advisor and subject matter expert to Chandler residents, the City Manager, City Council, City departments and stakeholders; and serving as the City’s spokesperson in highly sensitive, complex, or emergency situations.

QUALIFICATIONS
Any combination of related education, experience, certifications, and licenses that will result in a candidate successfully performing the essential functions of the job is qualifying. The most attractive candidates will possess the following:
Education: A Bachelor’s Degree in Police Administration, Criminology, or a related field is required. A Master’s Degree is preferred. Graduation from the F.B.I. National Academy, Senior Management Institute for Police, Southern Police Institute or Southwest Legal Command Management College are highly desirable.
Experience: At least eight (8) years in municipal law enforcement, with a minimum of five (5) years of experience at a command level position in a modern law enforcement organization of a similar size or larger.
Certification: Must have AZPOST certification or comparable certification from another state with the ability to obtain AZPOST certification as necessary.
Additional preferences: Command or executive level experience in an organization of similar size and complexity (or larger) is highly preferred.

COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS
The salary range for the Chief of Police is $220,320 to $236,640, with placement in the range dependent on qualifications. In addition, an excellent executive benefit package is provided including Public Safety retirement provided through participation in the Arizona Public Safety Personnel Retirement System (PSPRS).
