Police Sergeant’s assist in the supervision of police operations, college safety and security related activities, and for the performance of generalized police duties at the police station. Police Sergeants may be assigned special assignments requiring special abilities and knowledge that include internal and criminal investigation. The Compliance Position will also be responsible for supervision and oversight of administrative assignments. Police sergeants frequently participate in the work performed by subordinate officers and are to act and demonstrate the highest standards of internal and external customer service.

The Compliance Sergeant will be assigned responsibility for either the Accreditation Program or the Clery Compliance Program, in addition to the other duties. Both programs require the candidate to obtain specialized skills, training, and certifications. Due to the time and effort necessary to acquire and maintain these qualifications, the Compliance Sergeant will be ineligible to transfer to any other open Command Officer positions within the bargaining unit for a period of three (3) years.

Job Responsibilities:
- Present a professional and positive image of Macomb Community College; enforce professional and ethical standards for personnel under command.
- Support and implement all policies, orders, and directives of the department and the chain of command.
- Perform all duties required of a sworn police officer.
- Ensure personnel under supervision remain technically and tactically proficient.
- Educate staff on regulatory changes and advancements in policing techniques and technology.
- Conduct periodic inspections of uniforms, firearms, grooming, and equipment.
- Administer disciplinary actions fairly and in accordance with established procedures.
- Conduct shift briefings, training sessions, and employee performance evaluations.
- Provide ongoing oversight, guidance, and instruction to subordinate officers.
- Support crime prevention and suppression through patrol activities, safety checks, campus walkthroughs, and building security.
- Oversee and maintain departmental technology and ensure appropriate use.
- Participate in professional development, on-the-job training, and training seminars.
- Conduct surveys and investigations; prepare recommendations based on findings.
- Schedule work assignments for subordinates.
- Assist officers with investigations and complex or unusual situations.
- Review electronic reports for accuracy and MICR compliance; return reports for correction as needed.
- Assume shift responsibilities in the absence of a Lieutenant.
- Provide required after-hours notifications to command staff and college leadership.
- Provide weekend and holiday coverage as scheduled.
- Represent the department at community and business meetings.
- Maintain qualifications necessary to serve as LEIN TAC, LEIN Agency Security Officer, and MITN Operator.
- Serve as a Campus Security Authority as defined by the Jeanne Clery Act and complete annual CSA training.
- Perform other duties as assigned.

Accreditation Management:
- Oversee accreditation processes and assessments; evaluate program efficiency and effectiveness.
- Plan and coordinate on-site assessments; maintain accreditation records; lead preparation for mock and official assessments.
- Provide employee orientation and training related to accreditation standards.
- Draft and review policies to ensure compliance with standards; coordinate policy review with Command Staff and General Counsel.
- Serve as liaison to assessors, regional partners, and internal staff involved in accreditation activities.
- Maintain standardized formats and scheduled review cycles for department policies.
- Conduct inspections, research, planning, and related presentations.
- Represent the department at accreditation-related meetings.
- Assist with development of job task analyses, succession planning, and other continuous improvement initiatives.
- Maintain training files; schedule and document training; prepare reports required by MCOLES or the Chief of Police.

Clery Compliance Coordination:
- Responsible for developing, maintaining, and managing a comprehensive Clery Act Compliance Program including developing and maintaining Clery-related policies and procedures.
- Identify Campus Security Authorities (CSAs) in partnership with Human Resources, Student Affairs, and other departments.
- Ensure CSA responsibilities and training requirements are included in college job descriptions.
- Maintain and update the CSA roster and communication lists.
- Communicate Clery obligations, reporting procedures, and information requests to CSAs.
- Maintain a Clery-compliant audit trail and records retention system.
- Lead the Macomb Community College Clery Act Compliance Committee.
- Collect, review, and verify crime and referral data from law enforcement agencies and campus partners.
- Ensure appropriate crime classifications, review reports for timely warning requirements, crime log inclusion, and annual statistical disclosures.
- Maintain Clery geography classifications in collaboration with General Counsel and campus departments.
- Develop and maintain the Clery map; conduct annual compliance reviews.
- Coordinate collection of student travel information.
- Assist in developing and delivering campus-wide Clery Act training.
- Maintain training records, audit compliance with CSA training requirements.
- Research regulatory changes and assess their impact on college policy.
- Consult with external agencies and institutions regarding best practices.
- Maintain and update the Daily Crime Log in compliance with Clery requirements.
- Collaborate on preparation, publication, and distribution of the Annual Security Report.
- Ensure compliance with related federal regulations including the Drug-Free Schools and Communities Act (DFSCA) and the Violence Against Women Act (VAWA).
- Ensure proper retention schedules for all Clery-related documents.

Education:
High school diploma or GED required. Additional coursework or training in law enforcement principles and procedures required. Associate or bachelor’s degree in Criminal Justice or a related field preferred. Graduate of a police academy recognized by the Michigan Commission on Law Enforcement Standards (MCOLES). MCOLES certified or certifiable upon hire.

Qualifications:
Eight (8) years of experience as a certified police officer.
