EMU is accepting applications for full time police officers. The successful candidate must be able to effectively engage and positively interact with our diverse population of students, faculty, and staff. EMU offers a competitive salary package with salary step increase for those applicants with prior police experience.

EMU police officers are Sworn under Public Act 120 of 1990 and are MCOLES certified police officers vested with the responsibility of providing a safe learning environment by protecting life and property through fair and equitable enforcement of laws, ordinances and policies. Officers receive ongoing annual development in areas such as use of force, active shooter, fair and impartial policing, cultural awareness and AED/CPR medical first responder certification.

All members of the EMU Department of Public Safety (DPS) are considered campus security authorities (CSA’s) under the Jeanne Clery Disclosure of Campus Security Policy and Crime Statistics Act.

As such, you are required to report Clery reportable offenses that come to your attention. DPS employees are required to complete Clery Compliance Training within 14 days of employment and annually thereafter.

EMU police participate in the Eastern Washtenaw Safety Alliance. As such our officers are sworn in by the University, by the City of Ypsilanti and deputized by the Washtenaw County Sheriff; this extends the boundaries of our powers of arrest.

Summary of Responsibilities:

Acts as the first line representative of law enforcement/public safety to the EMU community.
Carries out the duties and responsibilities to enforce local, county and state ensuring equal application of constitutional rights are upheld.
Act as an ambassador of the law enforcement professional with fair and impartial enforcement strategies.

Benefit package provided to Eastern Michigan University police officers:

Pay Rate: $51,429- $70,498 (4 year progression)
Lateral starting pay-4 year top pay scale
3% salary increase with a bachelor degree
Uniforms paid for by the department
