Founded in 1949, California State University, Long Beach (CSULB) is a community within itself. During the regular session the university is as large as a small city. Reporting to the Vice President of Administration and Finance, the Chief of Police is independently responsible for the planning, organizing, and directing of comprehensive crime prevention and law enforcement programs, and the daily management of the University Police Department. The Chief acts as principle leadership in the daily operations of the police department and ensures employee actions conform to existing professional standards for, but not limited to: law enforcement activities, field services; support services, dispatch communications, finance, budget, and human resources, information technology, crime prevention, criminal investigations, K9 program, facility security, training and development, emergency preparedness, traffic safety and enforcement, and related environmental health and safety standards. The Chief provides leadership for a staff of 40, including 26 sworn officers, and manages a $4.2 budget.
A bachelor’s degree in a related field and at least ten years of progressively responsible law enforcement or public safety administration experience, including seven years in a management capacity are required. A graduate level or an advanced degree is highly desirable. The successful candidate will have demonstrated experience and a genuine commitment to working with and for diverse communities, a focus on social justice, and fostering an inclusive environment based on trust and mutual respect. Graduation from advanced law enforcement education, such as FBI National Academy or California POST Command College; experience in budget and personnel administration, including experience working in a collective bargaining environment; and experience at a university-based law enforcement agency or complex organization are preferred. The chief must maintain a current POST management certification in California or obtain a certification at the management level within six months of hiring date.
