Captain-Indiana University Police Department IUPUI (IN)

This is a management position within the Indiana University police department that administers the operations function of the department at the Indiana University IUPUI campus. Supervisory duties involve counseling, coaching, training subordinate personnel, and evaluating subordinates’ accomplishments. Oversees staffing, planning, directing, coordinating, budgeting, and evaluating the performance of all work units in the operations section that incorporates investigations and uniformed objective.

Fundamental Responsibilities:
Provides high level of operational leadership and coordination of public safety activities for the division; provides direction and guidance on escalated public safety situations.
Establishes public safety strategies and planning for major events, including managing crowd control, traffic control, and security operations; provides guidance and direction and ensures adequate staff resources.
Conducts a variety of personnel actions to include, but not limited to hiring, promotion, performance management, and dismissal.
Reviews and analyzes incident and activity reports to identify trends and track progress; creates and implements strategies designed to improve the effectiveness and efficiency of public safety operations in a variety of enforcement areas; makes recommendations to public safety leadership; ensures compliance with federal, state, local institution and police department policies.
Works with division chief of police and deputy chief of police to develop departmental policies and procedures as well as long range strategies/plans; serves on various university and local/state law enforcement committees.
Prepares and serves non-criminal documents; contributes to court proceedings, administrative hearings, and/or quasi-judicial proceedings.
Oversees response to emergency calls and leads in initiating appropriate actions.
May be assigned specific detail (such as investigations).

Qualifications
EDUCATION / WORK EXPERIENCE

Required

Bachelor’s degree and six years of law enforcement experience that includes three years in supervisory/leadership role OR
High school diploma or GED and eight years of law enforcement experience that includes four years in supervisory/leadership role.

Preferred

University law enforcement experience.
Degree in criminal justice or a related field.
Advanced degree.
LICENSES AND CERTIFICATES

Required

Valid driver’s license and ability to be insured by Indiana University.
ILEA (Indiana Law Enforcement Academy) certified.
Current and continued certification in university required courses such as CPR, AED, Blood Borne Pathogens, IDACS, etc.
Complete and maintain all required annual law enforcement training and certifications as prescribed by IUPD, Indiana State Law, and the Indiana Law enforcement Training Board (ILETB).
Current firearms qualification.

Preferred

Completion of ILETB Certified Instructor Training.
Graduation from advanced law enforcement management training (FBI National Academy, Southern Police Institute, or similar institution).
