The University of Kansas in Lawrence, Kansas is a major public research and teaching institution of nearly 28,000 students, 2,600 faculty and 3,400 staff. Reporting to and serving at the pleasure of the Vice Provost for Operations and Chief Human Resource Officer, the Director of Public Safety and Chief of Police is responsible for providing leadership and direction for all operations of the Office of Public Safety. The incumbent will formulate a strategic vision and mission for the department, develop policies and make policy and procedural decisions related to the operation and delivery of the department, police services and the security of the University. The incumbent will implement procedures for enforcement of agency regulations, state and federal laws and local ordinances.

Required Qualifications:
v Bachelors Degree in Police Science, Law Enforcement, Criminal Justice, Public Administration or a related field.
v Ten years of experience in commissioned law enforcement work with at least five years of progressive advancement in supervisory and administrative capacities.
v Hold and maintain all required police and National Incident Management System (NIMS) training certifications.
v Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing as evidenced through application materials, interview, and references. Experience in making public statements as necessary in a law enforcement capacity.
v Supervisory experience.
v Five years of progressive experience in managing, directing and/or organizing a large organization or unit.
v Experience in handling and responding to sensitive University, community and organizational issues, concerns and/or needs.
