The Village of Lansing, Illinois is recruiting a Chief of Police.

With a population of 28,000, Lansing (7.521 mi²) is located 26 miles south of the Chicago Loop, strategically located in the center of the dynamic Interstate 80 Corridor and is home to Lansing Municipal Airport and four TIF districts.

This executive leadership role is a remarkable opportunity for a proven law enforcement professional to join a progressive municipality with exciting projects and initiatives planned and underway. The department is ably staffed by 58 officers and 22 civilians.

Appointment will be made by the Village President with advice and consent of the Board of Trustees.

This position reports directly to the Village Administrator and is a full-time, exempt position.

This position will require work outside of regular business hours consistent with a public safety executive.

This position will have regular contact with other departments and the general public.

Candidates shall possess unquestioned integrity, thorough contemporary leadership, and, proven management and leadership skills. Demonstrated experience establishing and maintaining effective relationships with public safety partners, city departments, business community and solid citizen-oriented philosophy.

Imperative that applicants graduated from an accredited college or university with a Bachelor’s Degree in Criminal Justice, law enforcement, public administration or related field; five (5) years of supervisory experience and five (5) years of progressively responsible command experience in a municipal, county, or state police agency. Experience in a union setting is required.

A Master’s degree and/or completion of a nationally recognized advanced law enforcement administrative course is preferred and desirable. A valid motor vehicle operator’s license is required; Illinois mandated firearms certification or qualifications to obtain upon hire; and, Illinois police officer certification or ability to obtain within a reasonable time-period.

A select number of candidates will be invited to participate in an assessment center. A conditional offer of employment will be predicated on a background investigation, physical, polygraph, and psychological examination.

The salary range for this position is $146,275 to $161,673 commensurate with skills, knowledge, abilities, and demonstrated experience.
