Chief of Police-The City of Greenwood (SC)

The City of Greenwood, with an approximate population of 23,000, is the hub of the Lakelands Region of South Carolina.

DUTIES INCLUDE (but not limited to):
Under limited supervision, the Chief of Police is the administrative head of the Police Department. The Chief of Police has the ultimate responsibility for the preservation of life and property, preservation of law and order, investigation of crimes, and enforcement of state law and municipal ordinances. The Chief of Police shall direct the assignment of officers, establish training programs, maintain records, cooperate with other law enforcement agencies, establish rules, regulations, policies and procedures and provide advice to the City Manager, Mayor and City Council members on matters pertaining to the police department. The Chief of Police shall develop annual budget proposals and control budget expenses. Responsible for the direction of all activities of the Greenwood Police Department. The Chief of Police also has direct line responsibility for the fiscal management of the department; for planning, research, and development; and, for administering discipline. The Chief reports directly to the City Manager. This position requires a strong candidate with the ability to act with integrity and fairness.

Requires Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent experience supplemented by formal training, special courses or self-education that is equivalent to satisfactory completion of four years of college education or specialized advanced training or experience in police science, criminal justice or a closely related field.
Requires fifteen years or more of law enforcement experience, with five years in a supervisory or executive law enforcement leadership position.
Must possess law enforcement officer certification in state and/or out of state with the ability to acquire South Carolina law enforcement certification within one year.

The City of Greenwood Police Department has been continuously accredited by CALEA since March of 1998. In 2016, GPD was reaffirmed for accreditation with Meritorious Achievement of the Gold Standard with Excellence, which is the highest award given to an agency seeking accreditation through CALEA.
