Police Chief-City of Racine (WI)

The City of Racine, Wisconsin (pop. 76,000) is seeking an innovative Police Chief with a commitment to community policing. Racine is located along 1.2 miles of the Lake Michigan coast, approximately 60 miles north of Chicago and 30 miles south of Milwaukee. This diverse community enjoys a thriving lakefront and downtown area with multiple opportunities for recreational and cultural activities.

The Racine Police Department provides a full range of public safety services with an emphasis on delivering high quality community-oriented police services. Assisted by four deputy chiefs, the Police Chief will oversee a 2021 workforce of 189 sworn and 37 civilian employees, along with a fiscal year 2021 budget of $29.4 million. With the exception of the Department’s deputy chiefs and confidential staff, employees are represented by two collective bargaining units. The Police Chief is appointed by the Board of Police and Fire Commissioners and reports to the Mayor.

This position requires a Master’s degree in criminal justice, administration or a related field and 10 years of command experience, preferably in a department of comparable size. Candidates must have extensive knowledge of public safety principles and practices with a strong emphasis in community-oriented policing and experience providing public safety services in a diverse, urban environment. Qualified candidates will be leaders who unite citizens through collaboration, open and transparent communication, reform-minded innovations and problem-solving and demonstrate strong organizational and fiscal management skills. Must have outstanding oral and written communications skills as well as proven ability to develop effective internal and external working relationships. Experience working with unions strongly preferred. Must be licensed, or eligible for licensure, by the Wisconsin Law Enforcement Standards Board.

The salary for this position is up to $140,000—$145,000 +/- depending on qualifications. Competitive benefits package and participation in the Wisconsin Retirement System are included. City residency required within 12 months of hire date. Relocation assistance negotiable.
