Chief of Police-The Town of South Boston (VA)

The Town of South Boston, VA is seeking a progressive, innovative, experienced leader to serve as its next Chief of Police. Candidates must demonstrate extraordinary leadership and be highly innovative, collaborative, and experienced in building trust within the community.

Located in southside Virginia, the Town of South Boston has a population of approximately 7,600 residents. This position performs complex professional work with strategic and long range planning, budgeting, organizing and directing all police operations; handling personnel and public information matters; ensuring that all laws, regulations and procedures are followed; coordinating work with other law enforcement agencies, along with other Town, State, and Federal officials; setting policies and goals, implementing community based policing, and advising the Town Manager and Town Council on all law enforcement matters.

The Chief of Police reports directly to the Town Manager. This salaried supervisory position requires a minimum of 40 hours per week, with additional hours, including nights, weekends, holidays, and evenings as necessary. Selected applicants will be subject to a comprehensive background investigation.

Starting salary is up to $85,000 but negotiable depending on experience. Educational pay incentives are offered as an increase to yearly salary for anyone hired with an associate, bachelors, or masters degree. Those educational incentives range from $600 to up to $2,200 additional pay to yearly salary depending on the type of degree and experience combination. Benefits include the Virginia Retirement System (VRS) with LEOS. A $5,000 sign on bonus is available for a selected applicant with current Virginia law enforcement certification through the Department of Criminal Justice Services.

Preferred education and experience of ideal candidates:
– Bachelor’s degree or higher in Criminal Justice or related field; or a combination of education and experience.
– Extensive previous law enforcement experience is required with a minimum of five (5) years management experience.
– Active Virginia DCJS law enforcement certification or ability to obtain within one year.
– Graduation from or willing to attend when course is available, one or more of the following: FBI National Academy, the Southern Police Institute, Senior Management Institute for Police of the
Northwestern University School of Police Staff and Command, or other similar specialized law enforcement or management training.
