• Prince William County is governed by an eight member Board of County Supervisors. The eight-member Board of County Supervisors is elected by the residents of Prince William County and is the policy-making body for the County government. The Board adopts local laws, sets policies, decides how money will be spent and makes local land use decisions. The Board appoints a County Executive to act as the chief administrative officer and oversee the County government on a day-to-day basis. The County Executive is responsible for the appointment of all department heads and the development and administration of the $1.29 billion annual budget.
• The Chief of Police is appointed by the County Board at the recommendation of the County Executive. The Chief leads a full-service police agency with a staff of 701 sworn personnel, 186 non-sworn personnel, and an additional 89 Part-time personnel. The department consists of the following primary Divisions: Office of the Chief of Police, Support Services Division, Criminal Investigations Division, Operations Division and Financial and Technical Services Division. Support Services, Criminal Investigations and Operations Divisions are each commanded by a Major. The Department has been accredited by the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies (CALEA) since 1987. The FY 2021 Operating Budget for the Prince William County Police Department is $113,382,946.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
• Any combination of education and experience equivalent to a Bachelor’s Degree in criminal justice or a closely related field of study with course work in police science and administration and supplemented by graduation from the FBI National Academy, the Southern Police Institute, Senior Management Institute for Police or the Northwestern University School of Police Staff and Command or other similar specialized Police or management training.
• 7-8 years of progressive state or local police command and administrative experience; obtained rank of Police Major or above; to include 5-7 years supervising professional level personnel.
• Commonwealth of Virginia law enforcement experience is desirable.
• A Master’s Degree in Criminal Justice or Public Administration preferred.
• Must pass DMV record check.
• Must possess or be able to obtain within 90 days of hire Virginia DCJS Certification as a Law Enforcement Officer.
• Must possess a valid driver’s license that complies with the Commonwealth of Virginia statute requirements.
• Prince William County Personnel Policy requires the selected candidate to reside in Prince William County following appointment.

Starting salary range is $126,272 – $211,163 DOQ.
